Jacob Manternach, industry extension specialist in animal science, is the recipient of the staff 2026 Early Achievement in Extension and Outreach Award from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University. For the past two-and-a-half years, he has played a pivotal role in the success of the meat science extension program. Iowa State has a long and distinguished history as a nationally recognized leader in meat science extension and outreach, and Manternach has significantly strengthened that legacy.
Manternach fulfills several core responsibilities essential to the success of the program. He develops, plans and delivers engaging demonstrations for extension events; provides subject-matter expertise to Iowa’s small meat processors, entrepreneurs and established processing companies; and strengthens and supports industry relationships through fee-for-service projects. He also recognizes the importance of attracting and retaining high-quality students to the meat science program, investing time and energy in 4-H and FFA programming to cultivate interest in meat science and develop future leaders in the meat industry.
“What sets Jake apart is his ability to balance independence and collaboration with remarkable grace,” stated a colleague. “He takes initiative without hesitation, yet he remains deeply communicative and inclusive in every step of the process. His leadership is quiet but powerful – rooted not in authority, but in empathy, reliability and a deep respect for his colleagues and clientele alike.”
