Kolthoff receives Early Advising Award

Ann Kolthoff

Ann Kolthoff, assistant teaching professor in animal science, is the recipient of the faculty 2026 Early Achievement in Advising Award from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University. Early in her professional career, she has already demonstrated an exceptional commitment to undergraduate advising, student success and the continuous improvement of advising practices within the animal science department.

Kolthoff’s advising philosophy emphasizes accessibility, empowerment and holistic student growth. She believes effective advising is about fostering self-reliance – helping students not only plan their coursework, but also develop confidence in their decision-making, professional readiness and life goals. She developed a shared Canvas advising hub that provides her advisees with centralized access to key resources. This tool has significantly increased student independence and engagement in academic planning.

“Her advising has led to impressive student outcomes,” stated a colleague. “Her dedication, innovation and genuine care for her students have made her one of the most impactful advisors in the college.”
