AMES, Iowa - A free half-day workshop on the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy and incorporating nutrient reduction practices into farm operations will take place Tuesday, June 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Iowa State University's Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm near Sutherland.
The first half of the workshop will cover the purpose, need, action items and benefits of the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy. The second half of the workshop will walk participants through creating a basic nutrient reduction plan for their farm using two tools, the Nutrient Tracking Tool and the N Load Calculator, to estimate nitrogen and phosphorus loss from their row crop acres under current management conditions and their proposed nutrient reduction plan. The workshop will have information on both tile drained and undrained lands.
“We hope participants will gain a better understanding of and appreciation for the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy, while also learning to use tools that can help them create a nutrient reduction plan for their farm” said INRC Director Matt Helmers.
The free workshop is open to farmers, landowners and conservation professionals interested in learning more about the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy and nutrient reduction practices. Please register at https://iastate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9tnTaqP4o2LXKR0. A boxed lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet to use the online Nutrient Tracking Tool and nitrogen load calculator excel module during the workshop.
