The forum is jointly sponsored by Iowa State University and the Iowa Nutrient Research Center, the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State University.

Topics will be of interest to drainage stakeholders, including state and federal agency staff, county supervisors, crop consultants, academics, contractors and farmers and others interested in drainage issues and research topics.

This year’s program, scheduled for 9:00-3:45 at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center, includes two mini-symposia on research projects focused on:

  • a conservation innovation grant (CIG) looking at saturated buffers and bioreactors in Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa; and
  • drainage water recycling.

Another main topic will be the role of agricultural drainage in the production and mitigation of greenhouse gases.

“We are pleased to host this event in Ames. This is the 23rd year that drainage specialists have convened for the forum, which always provides a valuable opportunity to share findings from research efforts around the region along with other relevant updates,” said Matt Helmers, Iowa Nutrient Research Center (INRC) director and Iowa State University Extension drainage specialist, one of the event coordinators.
