Hansen Receives Mid-Career Achievement in Research Award

Stephanie Hansen, professor in animal science, is the recipient of the 2023 Mid-Career Achievement in Research Award from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University. She is a nationally and internationally recognized scientist in beef and dairy cattle nutrition and trace mineral nutrition and metabolism. Her research has made significant contributions to the field of mineral nutrition of domestic livestock. Hansen has garnered more than $10 million in extramural funds, with a diverse funding portfolio of industry, commodity and federal support. Mineral experts in both human and animal nutrition recognize Hansen’s expertise in fundamental mineral nutrition. She has given more than 30 invited presentations, both nationally and internationally, and is routinely called to consult on mineral and vitamin questions around the globe. She has enjoyed fruitful collaborations with experts in other fields, collectively advancing the science of mineral nutrition.

One of the most pressing challenges of mineral and vitamin research in cattle is the lack of students being trained in this discipline. Hansen is passionate about training the next generation of scientists. She seeks to build strong, highly trained students who can make meaningful contributions to a team. A colleague states, “Her enthusiasm for her research and dedication to mentoring students to become experts in this complex and critical field ensures a strong future for mineral nutrition research in livestock.”
