Jealae Jackson and Alescia King were two of this year's George Washington Carver Summer Research Program interns. They are friends both working toward masters' degrees in food science at Alabama A&M University.

As a George Washington Carver summer research intern, Keith Fennell was able to use his passion for science to help others. Fennell, a junior at North Carolina A&T State University studying food industry management, spent the summer researching E. Coli contamination during the washing and rinsing of romaine lettuce and strawberries.

The Iowa State University Horticulture Research Station has been around for 51 years, serving as a place where students and faculty members can grow crops and conduct research. One of the ways the station is able to maintain being a nice, productive facility is by selling their produce. Most recently they have partnered with the Knoll and Green Hills Retirement Community to provide them with produce.

For 40 years Iowa State University has celebrated the art of creating tasty meat products through its Sausage and Processed Meats Short Course. The annual short course allows participants to learn new trends and technologies from industry professionals through a hands-on experience.

Briana Young, a senior at Central Michigan University majoring in cultural and global studies with a minor in nutrition, is one of the George Washington Carver Summer Research Internship Program interns for the summer. Along with the other activities that are a part of the internship program, Young is working on a research project dealing with water sampling, which is helping her prepare for her future.

Madelyn Main, a sophomore in agricultural and life sciences education with a communications option, is an alumni relations intern for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Communications Service. Wherever Main's career ends up taking her, she knows the skills she is gaining will be beneficial to her in the future.

Ben Butikofer, a junior in dairy science, has been working at the Iowa State Dairy Farm since the fall of his freshman year. Although his work typically includes milking and breeding cows and various odd-jobs on the farm, he stepped into the role of a teacher on June 8 at the Dairy Farm's open house in celebration of June being Dairy Month.

Eight students from CALS will be attending the annual National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE) in New Orleans this year. The conference offers a national forum that addresses issues of race and ethnicity in higher education.

Brett Ramirez didn’t waste time when he started his new position on January 1. Just 51 days into his career, Ramirez earned his first funded project as a faculty member and principal investigator. He also has other various projects he is working on.

Nichole Huntley used to play veterinarian with her stuffed animals when she was young. Now she’s pursuing her dream as an animal nutritionist working with zoo animals. In June, Huntley will begin working with Mazuri, one of the nation’s largest food supplier for zoo animals. Huntley, a graduate student in swine nutrition, was began working with zoo animals in high school.
