Stephan Schmitz-Esser, an associate professor of animal science, has done plenty of research with microorganisms and how they interact with livestock such as cattle, pigs and chickens. Recently, his work has involved a drastically different species - giant pandas.

Mark Gleason, an Iowa State professor in plant pathology and microbiology, understands the importance of studying abroad and in 1998 began planning an exchange program between Iowa State University and the University of Costa Rica. Gleason published an article in HortTechnology about the benefits of long-term study abroad exchange programs.

Norman Borlaug's biography inspired Catherine Leafstedt to pursue an agronomy degree at Iowa State University. She grew up in West Des Moines and wasn’t interested in agriculture until she read about Borlaug. Borlaug was an Iowan who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for improving crop productivity and saving more than one billion people from starvation.
