National Ag Day Campus Celebration

by Carly Martin

National Agriculture Day was held March 8 and celebrated by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences on campus March 28. The CALS Student Council hosted the celebration in the Farm Bureau Pavilion in Kildee Hall.

The CALS Student Council served free burgers to more than 500 students. The meat came directly from Iowa State’s Meat Lab.

Each year as part of the celebration, CALS names the Ag Man and Ag Women of the Year. Recipients are selected based on “recognizing a true ambassador of agriculture that positively promotes agriculture through college clubs and industry relations and shows a passion for the agricultural and life sciences industry.”

This year the Ag Man of the Year award went to Darrin Rahn. Rahn will graduate in marketing and agricultural business with a minor in entrepreneurial studies this spring. He has been actively involved in the CALS Student Council and the National Agri-Marketing Association. In 2011, he received National NAMA Student of the Year, ISU’s high scholar award and was name to ISU’s Cardinal Key Honor Society.

Ag Woman of the Year went to Molly Heintz. Heintz will graduate in an animal science this spring. For many years, she has been very involved with the National FFA organization while traveling over 32,000 miles across the Midwest. She has served as co-chairs on numerous Block and Bridle committees. This year Heintz was nominated and honored to be featured on the 2012 Woman Impacting ISU calendar.

The CALS Student Council also sold green t-shirts to students with “I [heart] Ag” on the front.

Monsanto, a sponsor of the event, had a booth set up to share information about the company and give away free items to students.

Overall, the event was a success and a great way to celebrate our passion for agriculture throughout campus.
