Growing up on her family’s northeast Iowa dairy farm near Aurora, Cynthia Hamlett developed a passion for agriculture. After dipping her toes in a couple different majors during her freshman year at Iowa State University, Hamlett decided to double major in agriculture and society and dairy science.

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences faculty Basil Nikolau and Kan Wang are among six Iowa State University researchers named by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to its class of 2020 Fellows for “distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.” They were recognized at the AAAS’ annual meeting, held virtually in early February.

A gift from Jane and Richard Carter has allowed the Department of Agricultural Education and Studies (AGEDS) to bring Iowa agricultural educators into Iowa State classrooms through the new Teacher in Residence Program. Jacob Hunter ('11 ag and life sciences education), ag educator and FFA advisor at North Scott Community Schools in Eldridge, Iowa visited campus in October as the first teacher in residence.

The new director for Iowa State University’s Biology and Genetics Undergraduate Programs, Donald “Don” Sakaguchi, Morrill Professor of genetics, development and cell biology, is a widely respected scientist in neurobiology whose lab studies transplantable cells for their potential to replace and repair degenerating nervous system cells and help patients with neurological diseases and brain injuries.
