Scott Smalley Receives Early Advisor Award

Scott Smalley, an associate professor in agricultural education and studies, received the Early Advisor Award. Smalley is in his fourth year as an advisor and consistently receives positive feedback from his students. 

He is involved with every aspect of recruiting and retaining students, as well as maintaining relationships with high school agricultural educators and community college transfer programs. He also serves as the Ag Education Club advisor and coordinates the teacher education program.

Heidi Fichter, a senior in agricultural education and global resource systems, said Smalley has been her adviser for the past three years and always has the best interests of the student in mind. 

“Dr. Smalley has been consistent in always being able to help me and answer my questions,” Fichter said. “The way he can interact with me and make a positive impact on my time as a student at Iowa State has truly impressed me.”

Academic advising is key to assisting students make critical decisions about their future. Smalley advises students on an individual basis, which means looking at more than course choices. His developmental approach helps students fulfill their career goals.
