Joan Cunnick, a professor of animal science, received the Outstanding Advisor Award.
Cunnick has advised students in the microbiology program for 28 years. She’s advised the Microbiology Club for 23 years and helps students successfully host a microbiology workshop for high school students every fall.
Alissa Campbell, a former advisee who graduated in May and is now attending Harvard Medical School, describes Cunnick as an unstoppable force when it comes to enacting change and developing programs that optimize experiences for students and faculty.
“As an advisor and mentor, she cares deeply about the needs of students and tirelessly works to make their academic, professional and personal experiences at Iowa State valuable,” Campbell stated in her award nomination.
As an advisor, Cunnick takes time to work with students on an individual basis. Her vast amount of knowledge about professional schools, graduate schools, internships and employment opportunities help students plan their careers.
