VEISHEA FAMILY OF THE YEAR CONNECTED TO COLLEGE
The family of animal science sophomore Ben Schmidt was chosen as Veishea's Family of the Year. His sister, Kate, a senior in English, nominated the Delmar, Iowa, family. Ten members of the Schmidt family attended Veishea activities, according to an article in the Iowa State Daily, including being presented a plaque and riding in the parade. Craig Schmidt, director of development for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, is the brother of Brian Schmidt, Ben and Kate's father, who earned a bachelor's degree in farm operations in 1978.
COLLEGE FACULTY AND STAFF WIN VEISHEA AWARDS
Russ Mullen, agronomy, and Mike Gaul, agriculture and life sciences career services director, were among eight faculty and staff honored last week at the Veishea Faculty Award Ceremony. Students nominated and voted for the faculty and staff honored.
FFA MEMBERS ON CAMPUS FOR CONFERENCE
Iowa FFA members are meeting today and tomorrow, April 14 and 15, at Iowa State Center for the 80th State FFA Leadership Conference. They will take part in career development competitions, recognition for participation in events during the past year and interact with college and business professionals. College faculty and staff are helping as organizers and judges for the event and the College is hosting a barbecue tonight.
ENTREPRENEUR SCHOLARSHIP NAMED FOR BOB JOLLY
College of Agriculture and Life Science juniors and seniors are invited to submit applications for the Bob Jolly Entrepreneurship Scholarship. The scholarship, initiated by Roger and Connie Underwood in recognition of Jolly's dedication, leadership and stewardship of the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative, provides an award to a student who demonstrates commitment and aptitude for entrepreneurship. The $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior and pursuing a major offered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Application deadline is May 1. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO GET TASTE OF COLLEGE LIFE
The College is hosting Ambassador Shadow Days April 20 and 21. High school sophomores and juniors are invited to experience the College first-hand by spending the night with an ambassador and attending classes with them. There are 21 students tentatively planning to attend. Dean Wintersteen will speak with the group on April 20.
THINK TANK ON TO DISCUSS EMERGING DISEASE THREATS
The next Think Tank on Animal Agriculture will hear from James Roth, director of ISU's Center for Food Security and Public Health and executive director of the Institute for International Cooperation in Animal Biologics, who will discuss emerging zoonotic diseases of food producing animals. The April 21 meeting will begin with social time at 6 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the program at 7 p.m. in the Cardinal Room, Memorial Union. GAMMA SIGMA DELTA PRESENTS AWARDS AND ADDS NEW MEMBERS
Gamma Sigma Delta, the Honor Society of Agriculture, initiated 57 undergraduate and 23 graduate students as new members at its annual awards program April 9. Ann Marie Van Der Zander, horticulture, John Mabry and Ken Stalder, animal science, were initiated as new faculty members. William Cox, horticulture, won the senior scholarship and Jess Cavin, agricultural business won the sophomore scholarship. Cynthia Haynes, horticulture, received the Mission Award for Teaching; Joe Sebranek, animal science, received the Mission Award for Research; Jeff Iles, horticulture, won the Mission Award for Extension; Wade Miller, agricultural education and studies, received the Mission Award for International Agriculture; and Lloyd Anderson, animal science, received the Distinguished Achievement in Agriculture. This year marks the 101st anniversary of Gamma Sigma Delta at Iowa State.
PLANTS AND CLIMATE CHANGE MINI CONFERENCE APRIL 25
A panel discussion on climate change will conclude an afternoon of talks at a Plants and Climate Change mini-conference April 25. Speakers and panelists include Gene Takle, agronomy; Stephen Long, deputy director and lead investigator of the Energy Biosciences Institute and professor of crop sciences and plant biology at the University of Illinois; Catherine Kling, head of the CARD's Resource and Environmental Policy Division; Jian-Kang Zhu, professor of plant cell biology at University of California, Riverside; and Rattan Lal, director of Carbon Management and Sequestration Center at Ohio State University. The conference will begin at 1 p.m. in the Sun Room, Memorial Union. The conference is organized by the Plant Sciences Institute, Center for Plant Responses to Environmental Stresses, Department of Plant Pathology and the Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology.
JAN THOMPSON TO LEAD ADVANCE SESSION
The final ADVANCE Networking Event of the spring semester for science, technology, engineering and mathematics faculty will be held April 28. The Women's Lunchtime Discussion will feature Jan Thompson, ADVANCE equity advisor to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. It will begin at noon in 3512 Memorial Union. GRADUATE PROGRAM IN SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM APRIL 30
The Graduate Program in Sustainable Agriculture will hold its fourth annual research symposium on April 30. Jason Hill, research associate with the Department of Applied Economics and the Department of Ecology, Evolution & Behavior at the University of Minnesota, will be the keynote speaker. He will speak on "Opportunities and Challenges of Sustainable Biofuel Production." The program begins at 2:10 p.m. in the Sun Room, Memorial Union. A poster session will follow in the South Ballroom. Locally produced food and beverages will be available during the poster session. The symposium is open to all; no registration is required. ISU HOSTS AIR EMISSIONS MITIGATION CONFERENCE MAY 19-21
A national conference exploring the advantages, limitations and economics of mitigation technologies will be held May 19-21 at the Hotel Fort Des Moines in Des Moines. Coordinated by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and ISU Extension, the Mitigating Air Emissions from Animal Feeding Operations conference is designed to provide practical information about prevention, capture and treatment, masking and dispersal of air emissions from animal feeding operations.
POINTS OF PRIDE FEATURE RESEARCH
This week's installment of the 150 Points of Pride all deal with outstanding research in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Topics include poultry science, soybeans and economics. Just two weeks and 10 more topics remain in this project that honors Iowa State's sesquicentennial and the important part the College has played in its success.
HORTICULTURE STUDENTS COMPETE IN LANDSCAPE CONTEST
Nine horticulture students competed at the national Professional Landcare (PLANET) Student Career Days in Atlanta March 28 and 29. The annual event is sponsored by national and regional companies within the landscape industry, and brought together 850 students from 64 colleges and universities. Iowa State's top finishers included: Derrick Peterson, seventh in safety management; Shane Mariet eighth in compact utility operation; Bryce Frost, Luis Alvarez and Cody Cook, 10th in landscape plant installation; and Mariet and Ryan Abbas 14th in truck and trailer operation. Ann Marie VanDerZanden, horticulture, led the team.

ONLINE JOURNAL SEEKS ARTICLES BY OCT. 1
The Online Journal of Rural Research and Policy (OJRRP) is seeking research articles addressing rural development and community sustainability. The peer-reviewed Web journal focuses on the issues and policies of the Great Plains. The journal is open to any area dealing with rural issues. Empirical research articles are especially welcome; but the journal is also interested in social capital and other traditional qualitative approaches. The deadline for submissions is Oct. 1. Authors will be notified by Nov. 15 of acceptance, with publication on Jan. 1.

ANIMAL SCIENCE GRADUATE STUDENT MIXES WRITING AND STUDIES
Armitra Jackson, an animal science graduate student working on a Ph.D. in meat science, has written the first of what she plans will be 10 books for children on the importance of food safety. She began "The Birthday to Remember Forever" last year. The book's main characters are best friends Ace and Mace, who learn the importance of safe food handling in preparation for Ace's birthday party.
