Turf Club wins Turf Bowl competition eighth time in nine years

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State University Turf Club won first place at the 2010 Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition at the annual Golf Course Superintendents Association of America's education conference on Feb. 11 in San Diego. This is the eighth time the team has won the competition over the past nine years. Iowa State competed against 67 teams from 31 colleges and universities. The winning team members, who are all horticulture majors, include Nick Dunlap, a junior from Iowa City; Tyler Dykstra, a senior from Sibley; Bryan Huinker, a senior from Lakeville, Minn. and Caleb Swanson, a senior from Nevada. The team was awarded $4,000, which goes to the ISU Turf Club. Four other teams from Iowa State competed. The competition included a three-and-half hour test on soils, turfgrass species, weeds, diseases, insects, math, human resources and financial management.
