ISU Scientist Participates in June 17 Congressional Briefing — "Farming at the Mercy of Fad Diets"

An Iowa State University scientist will participate in a Congressional briefing June 17 titled "Farming at the Mercy of Fad Diets." Pamela White, university professor of food science and human nutrition and interim dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, is one of two speakers at the luncheon briefing for agricultural staff members in the U.S. House of Representatives. The event will be from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in 2226 Rayburn House Office Building. White will discuss "Farming and Food Science Converge: New Oat Lines Taste Good, are Good for You, and Create Crop Value." She will be introduced by Iowa Rep. Tom Latham. The second speaker will be Roger Sunde, chair of the nutritional sciences department at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He will address the impact of fad diets on market stability and agriculture production, and will be introduced by Wisconsin Rep. Tammy Baldwin. The event is being sponsored by the Coalition on Funding Agricultural Research Missions (CoFARM). Representing 130,000 individual scientists from 21 scientific organizations, CoFARM is a broad-based coalition united by a commitment to advance and sustain investment in fundamental and applied agricultural research.
