AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University professor Lisa Schulte Moore has received a fellowship from the 2013 Leopold Leadership Program at Stanford University's Woods Institute for the Environment.
Schulte Moore is an associate professor in the Iowa State Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management. Her research focuses on investigating agricultural and forestry practices to help stem biodiversity loss, enhance water quality, curtail climate change and improve the quality of life.
"The Leopold Leadership Program will afford me opportunities to engage with the public at a new level. I work with amazing teams of scientists, farmers and conservation personnel, who have the capacity to solve some major societal challenges regarding humans and the environment," said Schulte Moore. "I'm excited to broaden the impact of our work and foster a conversation to facilitate positive change."
Since moving to Iowa in 2003, she has focused on combining the study of human and natural systems; specifically, ecological and social facets of sustainable land management. In 2007, she received the Early Achievement in Teaching Award from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Both peers and students describe her teaching philosophy as one that opens horizons and encourages students to learn by doing.
Schulte Moore is one of 20 scientists chosen from 17 institutions in North America. The fellowship provides leadership and communications training to help researchers engage public and private industry leaders about decisions regarding sustainability and the environment. The program is named after Aldo Leopold, a native Iowan, recognized internationally for his leadership in the science, practice and communication of natural resource conservation.
