This year's Iowa State University report on animal agriculture is different from previous annual reports in two ways. First, it includes reports on all animal research done at Iowa State. And second, it is being offered on CD-ROM. "This year's report is more inclusive, covering all research at Iowa State related to the animal industry," said Maynard Hogberg, chair of the animal science department. "There have been annual research reports for the swine and beef segments since the mid-1990s. This new report includes that same type of content and builds upon the success and reputation of earlier efforts." The 2004 report includes research on beef, dairy, horses, poultry, sheep and swine. Researchers in the departments of agricultural and biosystems engineering, animal science, natural resource ecology and management, economics and veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine contributed to the report. The research was supported by the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station. The articles cover research done by ISU faculty, staff and graduate students; visiting scholars; ISU Extension county and field staff; and collaborators from other universities and professions. "The research outlined in this year's report relates to improving production efficiencies, environmental quality and animal product food safety," Hogberg said. "These fields all contribute to maintaining the strength and viability of animal agriculture and its pivotal role in sustaining the economy and quality of life in Iowa." To order a CD-ROM, send $10 per disk to the Iowa Pork Industry Center, 109 Kildee, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011-3150. Or call (515) 294-4103. The complete report also is available online.
