Iowa State University Research Farm Field Days Begin June 18

AMES, Iowa — The season of field days at Iowa State University Research and Demonstration Farms begins June 18 with two events. The Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm near Nashua will host a field day at 1:30 p.m. dealing with corn production, weather and market predictions for 2009, insect management and improving water quality with biofilters and cover crops. That evening the Rhodes Research and Demonstration Farm near Rhodes will be the location of a field day starting at 5:15 p.m. with topics including grazing riparian areas; grazing behavior of cattle; managing streams, crossings and riparian buffers; and waterborne pathogens. On June 24, the Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm near Crawfordsville will begin its field day with a noon lunch with a $5 charge followed by a 1 p.m. program including a crop season review; monitoring yield data for the Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) Program; cover crops for soil conservation; corn and soybean fungicides; and organic crop opportunities. The Northern Research and Demonstration Farm in Kanawha will begin its field day at 9:30 a.m. June 25 with a program on soybean traits, corn production, soybean aphids and crop problems. The Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm near Sutherland will host a field day June 30 beginning at 9 a.m. Program topics include auto steer technology, fungicides, a weather update, corn management and plant populations. The Armstrong Research and Demonstration Farm near Lewis will host its field day July 2 at 9:30 a.m. Field day topics include corn and soybean fungicides, corn and soybean production and precision planting.
