AMES, Iowa — A native Iowan on the Michigan State University faculty has been named the chair of the Department of Animal Science in Iowa State University's College of Agriculture.
Maynard Hogberg (pronounced HO-berg) will begin his new responsibilities Aug. 1. A native of Stanton, Hogberg has been a member of the animal science faculty at Michigan State University for 27 years, including 18 years as department chair.
"Dr. Hogberg brings extensive experience and unique vision for the future of animal science to the College of Agriculture," said Catherine Woteki, dean of the ISU College of Agriculture.
Hogberg succeeds Susan Lamont, who served a two-year term and will return to her research and teaching duties in the department.
Hogberg is known nationally and internationally as an expert on swine management and has been a leader in establishing guidelines for manure nutrient utilization for Michigan producers. At Michigan State, Hogberg has taught swine management and contemporary issues in animal agriculture. He has conducted research and extension activities in swine nutrition and management, animal environmental management and animal well-being.
Hogberg earned his three degrees from Iowa State — a bachelor's in agricultural education and a master's and doctorate in animal science. After completing his bachelor's degree, Hogberg taught vocational agriculture for five years in Ida Grove, Iowa. He also was an instructor in farm operations and agriculture education at Iowa State while working on his master's and doctorate.
Hogberg has received several awards and recognitions, including the Charles Stanislaw Memorial Distinguished Service Award from the National Swine Improvement Federation, the Animal Industry Service Award from the American Society of Animal Science and the Outstanding Supervisor Award from Michigan State University.
