Coats Receives International Award for Research in Agrochemicals

Joel Coats, a professor of entomology and toxicology at Iowa State University, will receive the International Award for Research in Agrochemicals in Atlanta. A one-day symposium in honor of Coats will be held on March 27 at the 231st American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting and Exposition, which runs from March 26-30. The symposium includes topics on natural products and environmental toxicology. Several of Coats' former students will join him at the symposium. For the past 30 years Coats has studied insect and environmental toxicology. Coats spearheaded the formation of the interdepartmental toxicology graduate program at Iowa State and served as the first chair of the program. He's researched both conventional and natural pesticides. The ACS is the world's largest scientific society with more than 160,000 members. The award presentation marks the beginning of the Agrochemicals Division symposium. Coats began teaching at Iowa State in 1978 after receiving his master's and doctorate degrees from University of Illinois and his bachelor's degree from Arizona State University.
