AMES, Iowa – The second Iowa State University Bacon Expo will be Nov. 8 from 1-5 p.m. in the Jeff and Deb Hansen Agricultural Learning Center on the Iowa State campus. The cost is $8 and 1,800 tickets will be sold through MidwesTix.com or at http://www.baconexpo.ag.iastate.edu/tickets/ beginning at 10 a.m. on Oct. 10.
This year’s family-themed event will feature industry representatives and local vendors, serving novelty bacon items and hundreds of pounds of bacon.
Bacon Expo, which is a student-powered event, is focused on education. The goal is to provide an alcohol-free, fun atmosphere for bacon enthusiasts, while showcasing student organizations and educational opportunities in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State.
“I think what sets the Iowa State Bacon Expo apart from other bacon events is our emphasis on education. We want to share the importance of agriculture and share the "gate to plate" message to provide a learning experience,” said Hannah Darr, a senior in global resource systems and one of three co-chairs for the event.
This year’s expo will again feature a bacon eating contest, an activity area for children called the “Pig Pen” and a new feature called the “Bacon Voice” talent contest. The entry fee for the talent contest is a non-perishable food item, which will be donated to the Ames Food at First Program.
"We really want to keep with the philanthropic spirit of Bacon Expo, with the donation of food items for Bacon Voice," said Rachel Lium, a junior in public relations and entertainment co-chair.
The Iowa State Bacon Expo is an event dedicated to expanding the horizons of bacon lovers and educating the public about pork production. The Iowa State Bacon Expo is the only student organized bacon event of its kind in the United States. Last year’s event attracted more than 1,000 people.
Sponsors for this year’s Bacon Expo include ISU’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Elanco and Iowa Select Farms.
