CALS Career Day Exceeds Expectations
Students and employers attended the largest Agricultural and Life Sciences Career Day in the nation on Oct. 20. The numbers indicate its continued success:
- 277 companies, a record number and an increase of 57 percent over four years
- 2,650 students attended, including students from 19 other schools
- 1,175 interviews were set up for the week, a 12 percent increase over last year
- 924 interviews were set up for Wednesday, a 15 percent increase over last year
- 316 photos taken in LinkedIn photo booth

Teaching and Students
Three ISU Students Awarded Global Food Challenge Fellowships
Three ISU students were among 10 college sophomores nationwide awarded fellowships through the Global Food Challenge for Emerging Leaders for Food Security program, created by Land O’Lakes, Inc. Addison Bidwell, agronomy, Leah Ellensohn, agronomy, and Megan Schnell, agricultural and biological systems, will work with agricultural experts and travel to Africa as part of the yearlong program.
CALS Student Brings HungerU Exhibit to ISU Campus
Marshall Dolch, senior in agriculture and life sciences education, brought the HungerU exhibit to Iowa State’s campus last week to help students learn about the serious, solvable challenges of world hunger. Dolch took a semester off last year to travel with HungerU, a mobile marketing exhibit that crosses the U.S. to raise awareness about the global hunger crisis.
CALS Students Attend Latinos in Agriculture Conference
CALS students Celize Christy, senior in animal science, Maria Melendez-Anadon, senior in industrial technology, and Jessica Sanchez, senior in microbiology, along with CALS Multicultural Liaison Officer Elizabeth Martinez-Podolsky, attended the fifth annual Latinos in Agriculture conference Oct. 18-21 in Grapevine, Texas. Melendez-Anadon served on a faculty/student panel about the “Power of Mentorship.” CALS was recognized as a long-standing sponsor of the conference.
Animal Science Internship Poster Fair Scheduled for Nov. 4
The second annual Internship Poster Fair will be held Nov. 4, 4 to 6 p.m. in the Kildee Hall atrium. The fair is hosted by students enrolled in the animal science internship experience course. There will be 39 posters on display.
Save the Date: Science With Practice Poster Presentation
This semester’s Science With Practice poster presentation open house will be Dec. 9, 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Kildee Hall Atrium. Science With Practice is a CALS experiential learning and work program for undergraduate students in agriculture. More than 25 students are active in the program this fall.

ISU Food Safety Experts Helping Producers Comply with New Regulations
Angela Shaw, food science and human nutrition, is part of an ISU team of food safety experts taking a lead role to help producers in Iowa and the Midwest comply with new federal regulations to guarantee the food we eat is safe. The new rules require companies to identify and address potential risks at all points of the food supply chain. More

The ANR at Noon session this Friday, Oct. 30, will feature Angela Shaw, food science and human nutrition, discussing the newest food safety regulation from FDA. More
Extension Releases Publication on Use of Saturated Buffers
ISU Extension and Outreach has released a new publication highlighting the recent work being done with saturated buffers in Iowa. “Cleaning Iowa’s Waters with Saturated Buffers in Iowa Watersheds” was prepared by Tom Isenhart, natural resource ecology and management, and Dan Jaynes, USDA National Laboratory for Agriculture and Environment.
Extension Updates Weed Identification Field Guide
ISU Extension and Outreach has released a new version of the Weed Identification Field Guide to assist producers and agronomists with accurately identifying weeds in Iowa corn and soybean fields. Updates include information on Palmer amaranth and herbicide resistance and management. Authors include Kristine Schaefer, pesticide safety education program, and Daren Mueller, plant pathology and microbiology.

CALS Seeks Applicants for Assistant Dean of Student Services
CALS seeks applicants for the Assistant Dean of Student Services. This position is responsible for leading the overall operation of the CALS Student Services team which supports the areas of student marketing, recruitment, retention, advising and mentoring. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Academic and Global Programs. Required qualification: tenured faculty member in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University. Applications are due Nov. 13 for guaranteed consideration.
Ross to Lead Iowa Pork Industry Center
Jason Ross, Lloyd L. Anderson Professor in Physiology and an associate professor of animal science, has been appointed director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center at ISU, effective Oct. 1. More
ISU Offering New Health Coach Certificate
ISU is offering a new, interdisciplinary health coach certificate for students seeking to add to their credentials in health care fields. The certificate is offered by food science and human nutrition, kinesiology and psychology.
Seed Science Center Remembers David Lambert
David Lambert, distinguished fellow of ISU’s Seed Science Center, died Oct. 16. He was 75. Lambert was an internationally recognized advocate for global food and nutrition security, lecturing and traveling widely on these issues. An initiative or scholarship in Lambert’s name will be established at the Seed Science Center. More
Alliance for Iowa State Posting Features Birt, Kling
The Oct. 21 posting by the Alliance for Iowa State featured the election of Diane Birt, food science and human nutrition, and Catherine Kling, economics, to the National Academy of Medicine and Sciences respectively. “A professor who is elected to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine has achieved one of the nation’s highest professional honors for outstanding achievement in service in science, engineering and health fields,” began the posting.” This year Iowa State University has celebrated two faculty members who attained this pinnacle.” More
United Way Update: CALS at 86 Percent of Goal
CALS has raised $58,222 to date, 86 percent of its goal to support the 2015 ISU United Way Campaign. ISU as a whole has raised more than $324,842 towards its goal of $415,000. Donations are still being accepted. Contact Carla Persaud (cpersaud@iastate.edu, 4-1823) with questions.

Oct. 27: Forestry Alum to Discuss Evolution of Forest Service
Jim Furnish (’68 forestry) will present a seminar and discussion of his memoir, “Toward a Natural Forest: The Forest Service in Transition,” on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. in 127 Curtiss Hall. Furnish is a consulting forester in the Washington, D.C. area after serving with the USDA Forest Service for 34 years. His book and seminar discuss the evolution of Forest Service management and policy from an environmental perspective.
Oct. 28: Retirement Reception for Laura Miller
A retirement reception for Laura Miller will be held on Oct. 28, 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Curtiss Hall Harl Commons. Miller has been at ISU for 25 years, including 17 as communications specialist for the Leopold Center.
Oct. 29: Feeding the World Seminar Features Ugandan Programs
The Feeding the World seminar series concludes this Thursday, Oct. 29, with a presentation by ISU students who have participating in the service learning and school garden program in Kamuli, Uganda. The seminar begins at 3:40 p.m. in 1204 Kildee Hall.

NIH, Wellcome Trust, HHMI Launch Open Science Prize
The National Institutes of Health has partnered with Wellcome Trust and Howard Hughes Medical Institute to launch a global science competition for new products or services to make open scientific research data broadly accessible to the public. Three Phase I awards will provide $80,000 to develop ideas into a prototype or to advance an existing early stage prototype. One Phase II award of $230,000 will be available to the prototype judged to have the greatest potential to further open science. Phase I submissions are due Feb. 29. More
Webinar: Updated NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures, Oct. 29
NSF has issued a number of important revisions in the updated NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide. The new PAPPG will be effective for proposals submitted or due on or after Jan. 25. A webinar will be held Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. to explain the changes. Registration is required. More

“Learn to Write or I’ll Rip Up Your Memo”
Billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones has some surprising advice for people who want to succeed in business: Take a journalism class. In a video interview this week, Jones told Bloomberg that companies save money when their executives write logically and coherently, and he said that taking a class in newspaper writing is the best way to learn to do that. He did, however, warn against confusing newspaper writing with magazine writing. The latter, according to Jones, offers stories whose climax comes at the end. “Every time I get a memo from someone writing magazine style, I literally tear it up, throw it away and make them take an online newspaper writing course,” he said.

Children’s Book Authors Invited to Farm Experience
The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture invites children’s book authors to attend an On the Farm Author Experience, Jan. 7-10 in Orlando, Fla. The focus of the training will be life on cattle ranches. Exploring ways to effectively reach children with valuable information about food and nutrition will be a highlight. The application deadline is Nov. 15. Development of this training and supporting resources is funded by the Beef Checkoff Program.
