College Name Change Open Forum Feb. 14
An open forum for faculty, staff and students to discuss the College's proposed name change to "College of Agriculture and Life Sciences" will be held Wednesday, Feb. 14. The brown-bag session will be held from noon to 2 p.m. in the Pioneer Room, Memorial Union. Dean Wendy Wintersteen will make brief remarks followed by questions and comments about the proposal.
Pesek Colloquium Set for Feb. 28
The seventh annual John Pesek Colloquium on Sustainable Agriculture will take place at 7 p.m., Feb. 28, in the Sun Room, Memorial Union. Cynthia Rosenzweig, research agronomist at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space and leader of its Climate Impacts Group, will present, "Climate Change and Agriculture: Learning Lessons/Proposing Solutions."
Swine Specialist Directory Updated
An updated listing of swine research and extension faculty members at Iowa State is available on the Iowa Pork Industry Center web site. It is current as of January 2007, and includes photos, contact info and main research areas for approximately 60 faculty and staff members based either on campus or at county ISU Extension offices. Gamma Sigma Delta Membership and Award Nominations Sought
Gamma Sigma Delta seeks award and membership nominations as it celebrates its 100th anniversary. Its annual initiation and awards ceremony is held each spring. Six awards are presented, including mission awards for excellence in teaching, research, extension and international; an Alumni Award of Merit; and a Distinguished Achievement in Agriculture Award. Information and nomination forms can be online. Award nominations are due by 5 p.m. March 1 to Robert Martin, 201 Curtiss. Membership nomination forms are due by 5 p.m. on March 1 to Barb Osborn, 107 Horticulture.
Hogberg Recuperating After Appendix Surgery
Animal science department chair Maynard Hogberg is on the mend after surgery last week to remove his appendix. He was traveling on business on Jan. 28 when he arrived in Nashville and went directly to the hospital. Surgery the next day removed his appendix and he spent the week in Nashville. He is home recuperating.
Alum New Pork Producers President
Alumnus Scott Tapper, new president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association, was featured in the Feb. 4 Des Moines Sunday Register. He earned a bachelor's degree in farm operations from Iowa State in 1979 and farms near Webster City. Tapper also is a member of the College of Agriculture Advisory Council and the Dean's Executive Council.

Sabbatical at NASULGC Offered This Fall
The National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC) offers a sabbatical opportunity for faculty this fall semester 2007 at its offices in Washington, D.C. The Sabbatical Fellows program seeks to expand the Association's analytical and operational capability by attracting capable individuals to NASULGC whose sabbatical projects advance the association's objectives while providing to the fellow the excitement and rejuvenation that sabbaticals are intended to generate. Many First-Year Students in College Active in Learning Communities
The College of Agriculture continues to be a leader on campus in student participation in learning communities. Last fall semester, nearly 74 percent of the College's first-year, full-time students participated in learning communities, a total of 324 students. Eighteen learning communities currently are active in the College. The benefits of learning communities are outlined in a video on the web by Steve Mickelson, agricultural and biosystems engineering.
