Artist Explores Animal Science

Amelia Velazquez is from Denison, Iowa and currently attends Denison High School. Velazquez is working with Joshua Selsby, an animal science professor, researching oxidative stress and duchenne muscular dystrophy. Velazquez says it’s interesting to see the antibodies bind to the proteins and developing films. Velazquez has gained experience and knowledge of animal science from this internship experience. Her hope is to pursue a master’s degree related to art.

What words of advice do you have for someone who has a passion for science?
“Take advantage of opportunities, you gain plenty of knowledge and experience. It’s worth it.”

If you could have one superpower related to science, what would it be?
“Time travel so that I could go back in time and work side by side with other scientists.”

Who is your role model and why?
“My dad because he has inspired me to not only find a passion for science but for art as well.”

What is your favorite summertime food?
“Pineapple.”

Where do you wish to travel?
“Italy.”
